Rocky Mountain National Park

August 16-17, 2000

On the afternoon of August 16, 2000 I drove from the Denver area taking the scenic route to Estes Park, Colorado, just outside Rocky Mountain National Park. Early the next morning I drove into the park in the dark and spent about four hours in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Then I hustled off to the Denver International Airport for the long journey back to civilization.

This was the reason I got up at 5:00AM on Thursday (8/17/00) and drove into Rocky Mountain National Park in the dark. I took this picture at Rainbow Curve on Trail Ridge Road just after sunrise on a cloudy morning.

It was hard to set up the camera and navigate through the rocks to get into this position. I ate breakfast not far from here. It was still early in the morning and somewhat dark and misty.

I am above the tree line not far from Ute Trail where it crosses Trail Ridge Road.

As I was driving to the Park on 8/16/00 I came across some freshly fallen hail.
