Annex Boxes

Jeff Schwab

Many ECN terminals are now being served by "annex" terminal servers manufactured by Encore Computer Corporation rather than being connected directly to one of the ECN host computers. The annex servers allow a terminal to run up to three simultaneous connections to the ECN hosts. These terminal servers connect directly to the ECN ethernet cables and use either the standard "rlogin" or "telnet" protocols to communicate with the ECN hosts. The normal annex server prompt is the "name" of the specific server followed by a colon. By convention, ECN is naming the annex servers "anxXN", where X is a site specific letter and N is the number of the annex server at that site. To connect to an ECN host from an annex server, type the command "rlogin XX" where XX is the name of the desired ECN host. For example:

                             anxc4: rlogin cb

In addition to the capability to run multiple simultaneous sessions, the annex servers also allow terminals to continue running when a local ECN host is down. In the past, any ECN terminal that was directly connected to an ECN host would be out of service if the ECN host failed for any reason.

As with any new hardware, there may be some "shakeout" problems with the annex servers. The ECN staff will try to rectify these problems as soon as possible. In addition, there may be certain types of peripherals or microcomputers which do not function properly with an annex connection. The ECN staff will assist users in making alternate connection arrangements as required.
