On Dec. 28th the CA VAX went to its new home in Potter, and the G1 GOULD machine was re-named CA.
This means that those users who were located on the CA VAX had their accounts moved to the GOULD; and now former CA VAX users plus former G1 GOULD users are all located on the G1 GOULD machine which has been renamed CA. The net effect is that if you were formerly on CA, your address is the same, CA, (but the machine has changed); if you were formerly on G1, your address has changed to CA (but the machine is the same).
Much effort was expended over the holiday break to assure that electronic mail would be delivered to the correct recipient after machines were moved and renamed. Thus, if last term your mail was delivered to the CA VAX, it will now be delivered to the CA GOULD; and if you had your mail delivered to G1 GOULD, it will now be delivered to the CA GOULD. Please contact Stacey Clark, "mail clarkst", if you experience any disruption in e-mail service.
The GOULD machine runs 3-10 times faster than a VAX, depending upon your application. Thus, if the load average is 7-10, it will "feel" like a load average of 1-2 on CB.
You must compile your source code for programs on the GOULD, executable files generated on the old CA VAX or on CB will not execute on the GOULD machine. There are help files available on the GOULD (ie, "help change2" and "help changes") that describe some of the common problems. A paper copy of each of these files is available from your site specialist.
Gould machine users will access the PUCC CDC 6000 series machines by having their commands relayed to VAX machines which have direct links to PUCC. The ECN software for this facility operates satisfactorily at this time.
Also, because of the cost involved, not all of the software packages available on the VAX are available on the GOULD. The following is a summary of some of the software packages NOT available.
Multiplan - Spreadsheet software We anticipated Multiplan would have been installed on the Gould machines by this time, but the vendor has not been able to ship. ECN staff will coordinate arrangements for all multiplan users on VAX machines until Multiplan is available on the Gould machines.
VC - Spreadsheet software VC will not be available on the Gould machines. VC users are converting their applications to use Multiplan.
Unify - Database management software Unify will not be installed on the Gould machines at this time. Unify users who have access to an ECN VAX system may continue their applications on a VAX and other users may use other software available on the Gould machines.
DI3000 - Graphics software The Precision Visuals Inc. software package is available for the Gould Systems; but as reported in the September memorandum, it is very expensive. PVI's current proposal places the cost in the range of at $19,000 per Gould CPU. The list price for DI3000 software for the Gould machines is $85,000 per machine.
