Webster at Your Fingertips

Marian Hensler

Have you ever been hurrying to complete a report at the terminal and wished you had a dictionary available. Well, now you do! Webster is a program that looks up words from the online copy of Webster's 7th dictionary. Do you want to know how to spell a word, review a definition or check pronunciation? Then Webster is the program for you.

To use Webster in interactive mode simply type "webster ", and the program will prompt you with "Word:". Then you type in the word you want defined, or type a blank line to exit. If the word is found, webster will then provide the complete dictionary entry. If the specified word is not found, webster will try to find close matches (a great help if your spelling is weak).

After giving webster a try, you might want to learn some of the additional options available. Typing "help webster" will bring this information to your screen.
