[previous article]An improved version of cap (Columbia Appletalk Package for UNIX) has been installed at the ECN. This program allows a UNIX host machine to be used as file servers for Macintosh workstations (via Appleshare). Some of the applications were extensively rewritten in the 5.0 release, primarily, papif and lwsrv. This update rids the software of annoying bugs while increasing portability and compatibility. For the average user the most noticeable improvement is the elimination of the timeout problem for jobs sent to LaserWriters. The on line manual page,
man cap
explains more about this command. If your would like to make use of this program, please contact your site specialist for information on access privileges.
Cap has three main applications:
man papif
for more detailed information.
man lwsrv
man aufs
The latest version of CAP is running smoothly serving Macintosh workstations (via Appleshare) on Vax, Sun3 machines, en (Gould NP-1), and ei (Gould 9080). In addition, cindas (Sun4) machine is running cap as a "test" file server.
