CAP Version 5

An improved version of cap (Columbia Appletalk Package for UNIX) has been installed at the ECN. This program allows a UNIX host machine to be used as file servers for Macintosh workstations (via Appleshare). Some of the applications were extensively rewritten in the 5.0 release, primarily, papif and lwsrv. This update rids the software of annoying bugs while increasing portability and compatibility. For the average user the most noticeable improvement is the elimination of the timeout problem for jobs sent to LaserWriters. The on line manual page,

Cap has three main applications:

• papif ...is a line printer input filter, spooling from a UNIX host to a LaserWriter. It allows you to print to a LaserWriter attached to the Appletalk network (via Kinetics Gateway), from a UNIX host. Type

• lwsrv ...offloads spooling to a LaserWriter from a Macintosh workstation to a UNIX host. In other words, you can spool a MAC submitted print request off of the Vax ea for a LaserWriter on the Appletalk network. For details, type

• aufs ...is the Appletalk filing protocol UNIX File Server. Aufs provides file serving from a UNIX host to a Macintosh workstation running Appleshare software. For more information read the manual page on this command by typing

The latest version of CAP is running smoothly serving Macintosh workstations (via Appleshare) on Vax, Sun3 machines, en (Gould NP-1), and ei (Gould 9080). In addition, cindas (Sun4) machine is running cap as a "test" file server.
