A sc Sample: Give It A Try

Sc is a new spreadsheet at ECN. As a site specialist, I receive numerous requests for information about this spreadsheet and usually direct new users to the online tutorial program. This is available to you by typing "sc /usr/ecn/sc.tutorial" .

Also useful are the online manual pages. To access these, type"help sc".

• Give sc a try by adding a column of numbers. To start type "sc". This will bring up the sc work screen. The cursor is pointing at the column A, row 0. This cell is named A0.
• To place a number in the A0 cell, type an equal sign & the number. For example,"=210000" followed by a "return".
• One way to move the cursor down one cell in column A is like vi. You type a "j" to move down the column. The cursor is now highlighting column A, row 1 or cell A1.
• Place a number in this cell, type "=3333" and a "return".
• Move the cursor (using the "j" key) down to A5.
• Add the column by typing "=@sum(A0:A4)" and "return".

Your screen should now look like this:

A5 [@sum(A0:A4)]
Cell: "<>label; =value; x clear; cOPY; mARK
Database: Get;Put;Merge;Write;T run tbl fmt;Define directory

     A         B         C         D         E         F
0  21000
1   3333
2
3
4
5  24333 <- (cursor here)

The sum will be recalculated in cell A5 if you change any entry in cell A0,A1,A2,A3, or A4.

Sc has an online help section, accessed by typing "?". The information about summation is in "J: range functions".

• To quit, type "q".
