Aufs: Sharing Mac Files Between Several Users

Mike "groupy" Moya

Have you ever wanted to set up your own personal file server? One where you and just two/three/four/etc other people could share mac files between yourselves. Aufs could be your solution.

Appleshare ownership of files is just like UNIX ownership. You have three categories of users; owner, group, and other (meaning everybody else). Each category has the opportunity to have read/write/executable permission on a file...this usually depends on what the owner has set the permissions to.

What this means is that you can now set up a UNIX group (the members being the members of your team) and set up each user in the group with a path to a single Aufs volume. This volume would have the group permission set to whatever the members require. The result would be all members of your group sharing the same files.

The above procedure is not open to everyone! You must have a legitimate need for creation of such an arrangement. For more information send me mail (login: moyman) to see if you can share Mac files between a group of people...
