1990 ECN Network Map

Steve Weinrich

Some people have you been wondering when the next ECN Network map would be put up for display outside room 104 of MSEE. Well, wonder no more! The 1990 ECN Network map is nearing completion.

After many months of research, updates, and revisions, this new map is almost ready for display. It is taking on a slightly different look than the previous ones. We have included new icons for Sun servers, laser printers, terminals, and other types of hardware.

Since the overall speed of the network has increased, we have moved to a different color scheme. Each color on the map indicates a different "MIPS" rating. MIPS stands for Millions of Instructions Per Second. Now with the end of 1990, I have now had a chance to catch up on the changes. When I take a step back and look at the size and density of the network, I really start to appreciate the tremendous load under which the software and hardware staff are working. They are managing a network that is growing exponentially! By the time you finish reading this newsletter, there will have been another Sun workstation installed, another laser printer added to the ever growing list, another 2 terminals serviced, and without missing a beat, another Sun Server crash will have been been avoided by the careful workings of the software staff, while the machine was still running.

Well, on to the good stuff; here are some numbers that might take you by surprise:

          Hardware Type: Number:
          _________________________________
          Sun Servers 36
          Sun Workstations 352
          Terminals 1,200+
          Laser Writers 85
          Macs 300+

With well over 11,000 users accessing over 100,000 accounts, the ECN Network is an impressive sight to behold. If you have questions about the network, or anything related to the maps outside room 104 of MSEE, please send email to: weinrich@ecn.purdue.edu. I will be happy to answer all the questions I can about the network and the new 1990 ECN Network map.
