ANNOUNCE Newsgroups

NEWS is a large collection of information available to the general user. This information is grouped into categories like comp.sys, comp.os, misc.forsale, rec.games, just to name a few. New information (articles) is posted to most newsgroups regularly. A specific collection of information is provided to users through announce newsgroups. These newsgroups span the entire NEWS collection.

Announce newsgroups are usually moderated and used to announce news to a specific group of interested readers. (Moderated newsgroups have someone that oversees the information that is posted to a group.) Chemical Engineering is using the idea of an announce newsgroup internally with the creation of purdue.ecn.che.announce. We use this newsgroup to distribute seminar announcements, general notices and memos, basically any information of interest to our faculty, staff and/or students. At the same time, the school has discontinued distributing paper copies that duplicate the information provided in our newsgroup. Information of a more formal nature is still sent by email or is distributed in hard copy form.

The ECN has purdue.ecn.announce, a newly created newsgroup that is used to address the general ECN community. It is used to provide timely information regarding machine down times, new software and software updates, plus other pertinent information to the ECN user.
