ONLINE

--Get answers to commonly asked computer question from the archives of the ECN newsletter articles, type "help ecnnews" pick "NEWSLETTERS" . You can select the issue of choice or look through the MASTER.CONTENTS file to locate the article you are seeking.

FACE-TO-FACE
--Consultants are on duty in major terminal rooms many hours each week. Weekday hours are listed below. Please ask about weekend coverage.
             Civil 3144 -- 6pm to midnight weekdays
            Grissom 120 -- 9am - 11pm M-F
         Mechanical 244 -- 4:30pm - 11:30pm M-Th
         Mechanical 353 -- 5pm - 10pm M-Th
               MSEE 189 -- 9:30am - 11:30pm M-F
--Each engineering school has a knowledgeable site specialist to answer questions and offer opinions of different software packages. Type "man sites" to locate the site person who can assist you.

ELECTRONIC --All general questions should be sent to your site email alias for the consultants at your particular site/department to answer.

                School Consultant alias

          Aeronautical gconsult
              Chemical kconsult
            Electrical econsult
            Industrial gconsult.
            Mechanical mconsult
               Nuclear gconsult.
Once mailed, your questions will be received by all the consultants at that site. Most standard questions will receive a prompt reply; however, some questions require research--these take a bit longer. If your question is related to the system, the consultant will forward your mail to the site specialist who will forward it to the ECN staff if he/she can't answer your question. If you send a question that is normally answered by a consultant to a site specialist, he/she will forward the question to the consultants who will then answer your question.

--Email offers you an easy way to communicate with your site person. Your site's login is listed when you type "man sites" . Remember if you are experiencing a problem, include in your email all necessary information: which machine, which printer, a copy of the command line, a copy of any error messages the machine generates, and a description of what happens. While your site specialist has solved many user problems, he or she frequently requires more information than..."It doesn't work!"

--Email may be sent to a central consultant pool via the login: 4unix. This group has a goal of trying to respond to email questions within one working day...some tricky problems take longer. Another option is to leave a telephone message for the consultants relaying information concerning your problem at 49-4UNIX (49-48649).

AVAILABLE SOFTWARE
The Engineering Computer Network has a booklet listing the software packages placed on ECN machines. Copies are available from your site specialist. Ask for ECN #61, Software List.
