Autocad Release 12 from Autodesk Inc. will soon be available on your ECN workstation. "Why," you may ask yourself, "does this concern me?" (Go ahead, ask.) The reason is AcadR12 is one of the snappiest pieces of software for precision drawing and image generation to come out in a long time. So let me try and make a believer out of you.
For users unfamiliar with the Autocad package, it is a top of the line Computer Aided Drafting/Design (CAD) program that has become an industry standard in manufacturing, architectural, theatrical, and many other fields. It's ease of use, incredible flexibility, and professional output quality make it a very useful package to know.
For users already familiar with Autocad: Release 12 greatly increases your capability and productivity in creating and manipulating 3d solid models. A plethora of new commands have been added to facilitate moving and modifying the basic primitives used to build the more complex virtual objects used in applications such as Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) or 3d rendering.
Also included with the latest release are tools for importing and exporting bitmap images into and out of Autocad drawing files. Complex images that were scanned or created with paint & draw programs can be brought in from PostScript, Gif, Tiff, or other image formats and then positioned, placed, and incorporated into your drawing.
User interface has been greatly simplified from complex entries on the Command: prompt line with popup dialogue boxes that display all option that are currently available to you. If however you find previous methods simpler, the dialogue boxes are easily disabled.
So if you want to draw up a quick schematic, make an ergonomic box for your latest gizmo, CAM the perfect 45 degree gear, or create a virtual world, then check out the upcoming installation of Autocad 12 on your workstation.
