Art in Chemical Engineering's Computer Terminal Rooms

NO NAME NEWSLETTER -- September 1995

Brenda Wisnewski

New art is located in two of the computer terminal rooms in the Chemical Engineering Building. Located in room 117a are five prints collectively known as the CYRK series. These prints were given to Purdue by the Art Ministry of Poland in the 1970's. At this time many Polish artists elected the circus as the theme for these state supported works because of its non-political nature. Three prints by H. Hilscher depict very bold colors in his drawings of either lions or tigers. The soft colors of the bears on the ball print were drawn by A. Krzysztoforski. B. Bocianowski's print of a clown follows the bold color scheme of H. Hilscher.

The work of Richard Walker is located in the HP computer laboratory, CHME 111. His paintings consist of dramatic urban cityscapes eerily reflected in harsh neon lights, electrifying skies, or in icy pools of light. The cities depicted in these print are San Francisco, New York City and Paris. Walker uses acrylics, pastels, and spray paints to achieve the appropriate textural effects he wants viewed. He says this of his work:

"In my work, I try to communicate not only the positive energies and excitement of city life but, also, the underlying dangers and feeling of unease that are also present."

If you happen to be in either of these terminal rooms, look up and admire the beauty of these posters.
