ECN And PUCC Share Computer Account Information

ACMAINT

ACMAINT is short for ``account maintenance''; a program created by the ECN with revisions and code revision done by both the Purdue University Computing Center (PUCC) and the ECN. ACMAINT software is used to create/delete/change computer accounts, build/alter passwords, update office number, office phone, and home phone information.

As of 9/3/97, there were 786 ECN UNIX computers administrated by ACMAINT. Only a very few ECN computers do not include ACMAINT. The following computers at the Computing Center are under ACMAINT: champion, dbms, elnino, expert, fortress, guardian, icd, lookout, mentor, msrc, osd, pdn, picket, ranger, and trustee. If you change your password, office number, or phone number information on any computer under ACMAINT, it should change on all other computers under ACMAINT control. Changes require from a few seconds to several hours to propagate to all machines.

User Changeable Information

Once your account is created, there are commands you can use to change your account information. Run these programs on your favorite ECN UNIX computer. Account updating features are fully implemented on the Sun machines. HP, SGI, IBM and NT stations do not allow access to all features.

Don't confuse ACMAINT with PH. ACMAINT has information about your computer accounts. PH is basically an electronic phone book that can also contain email and World Wide Web address information. For more information on PH, see ECN No Name Newsletter, May 1996 and September 1996, available online at http://www.ecn.purdue.edu/ECN/Newsletters/. Some information like phone numbers are stored in ACMAINT and PH. It's best to keep them both up-to-date.

passwd

Type "passwd" to change your password. It will ask you for your current password (to make sure it's you) and for your desired new password twice (to help prevent typing errors).

Your password will be changed on all machines under ACMAINT.

finger

Type "finger login" to see information about computer account ``login''. If you'd like to look at the finger information for an account login on a computer other than the one you're logged on, type "finger login@computer" . For example, type "finger mds@resolute" to see mds' information on the computer named resolute.

chfn

Type "chfn" to change office number, office phone, or home phone.

chsh

Type "chsh" to change your shell. Your shell is the program that prints a prompt and waits for you to type a UNIX command.

Common shells:
Bourne Shell /bin/sh
C-Shell /bin/csh
Korn Shell /bin/ksh
T-Shell /usr/local/bin/tcsh
Bash Shell /usr/unsup/bin/bash
