Feeling Secure On The ECN Web

The World Wide Web has changed and improved the way the world gathers and shares information. Today, many commerical sites collect and process sensitive information. This should only be done in a secure environment.

The service that is generally available within the ECN Web does not offer this level of security. As a general rule, if the world should not see your data, do not place it within your public-web directory. Examples of sensitive information which may require a secure environment are:

Situations requiring stringent control of sensitive information should be discussed with the ECN Webmaster. Send inquiries about your application to webmaster@ecn.purdue.edu.

Restricting Access To Information

Users who wish to limit access to specific files may do so by disallowing permission to the public at large. Using authentication procedures permits the reduction of general access, but does not provide 100% security. Information on implementing authentication protocols into your web structure can be found in the FAQ listing associated with servers.
