Advertising Your URL & Email Address

Simplify your URL and email address by taking advantage of a mechanism the ECN has to read PUCC's PH information. Taking a few minutes to update this data in your PH record has long term benefits for you.

URL

In Engineering a mechanism has been established to provide an alias to your URL. This mechanism uses data that you must set in your PH information. The PH field used is the URL field. Once you have set your URL field in PH, you can advertise your URL as follows: http://www.ecn.purdue.edu/~PH_ALIAS/
or
http://www.ecn.purdue.edu/~PH_QUALIFIED_NAME/

"PH_ALIAS" may or may not be the same as your ECN login and your PH_QUALIFIED_NAME would be something assigned by the University and look something like: john.q.smith.14.

You can see your PH_ALIAS by going to http://www.ecn.purdue.edu/PH/. For information on changing your PH_ALIAS, go to http://www.ecn.purdue.edu/ECN/FAQ/ph/. You may want to align your PH_ALIAS to your ECN LOGIN if you LOGIN is available in PH. Once you have set your PH_ALIAS, you will probably not want to change it.

EMAIL

Once you set your PH "service" field to "store" or "forward", you can start advertising your email address as one of the following: PH_ALIAS@purdue.edu
or
PH_QUALIFIED_NAME@purdue.edu

The ECN strongly encourages you to take advantage of these utilities for the following reasons:

  1. To avoid hostnames in your address which may change.
  2. If you change jobs within the University, your advertised email address and the URL will continue to work as long as you set PH fields to the new addresses.
  3. If the host servicing your web page changes, you only need to change your PH URL, but everyone will still be able to find you.
  4. If someone is trying to find your email address or your URL and he/she only knows to look for you at Purdue, he/she will likely find you by using PH.
