Mobility Program - How to Install the Registry Editor and Modify the Jornada Registry

You may ask yourself ... Why do I need to modify the Jornada registry?
On all processors except CEPC (the HP Jornadas 720 and 568 have the StrongArm processor; the HP Jornada 548 has an SH3 processor), a new entry needs to be added to the device registry in order for eMbedded Visual C++ 3.0 and eMbedded Visual Basic 3.0 to recognize the platform and allow files to be downloaded properly. To edit the Jornada registry, you need a registry editor for Handheld/Pocket PCs (WinCe 3.0) such as the Pocket Registry Editor.

JORNADA 720 USERS :

1. Install PowerToys 3.0

NOTE: PowerToys 3.0 includes several software tools besides Pocket Registry Editor. It also includes Flight Scheduler, Business Cards, Quick Start Menu, PIM Transfer, File Associate, Sound Schemes and Network Utilities. You just need the Pocket Registry Editor, but you may want to install some of the other applications too.

To install PowerToys 3.0, locate and run the installer program PToys.exe on your desktop PC. Select which components you want to install. Next, connect your Jornada to the desktop PC. ActiveSync will automatically start and download the program on your device.

2. Modify the Jornada Registry

Caution: The registry contains information about how your device runs. If your registry contains an error, your Handheld PC may not work properly. Thus, take great care when editing the Registry: you do so at your own risk. Follow the instructions carefully.

On your Jornada, select Start > Programs > Accessories > Pocket Registry Editor. This will open the Jornada registry.
Locate and Click on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder.
Now you need to add a folder in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. To do that, click on the Registry Tab. Select New Key. Type Windows CE Tools as the subfolder name.
Being on the Windows CE Tools subfolder, click on the Registry Tab. Select New String.
- Enter Platform in the Name field. Double-click on Platform. This will open a window.
- Enter {0F9D255B-97DA-4641-A8E6-7A7411D2472F} in the Value data field.
Note: You should now have a new entry on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Windows CE Tools with name Platform and value "{0F9D255B-97DA-4641-A8E6-7A7411D2472F}".
Click on the Registry Tab. Select Exit.
Once the entry is made, you must do a soft reset of the device for the changes to take effect. To do that, insert the stylus into the red reset button located next to the Q key on the Jornada's keyboard.

Please read section 2 above. The Pocket PC registry already contains a value for the Platform Key, but you will need to change it.
Install and run the Pocket PC registry editor on your Jornada. On the Jornada registry, locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder. Open the Windows CE Tools subfolder and edit the Value data field for Platform. Delete the current value and enter {0F9D255B-97DA-4641-A8E6-7A7411D2472F}. Save the changes and exit. Do a soft reset of the device for the changes to take effect.
