Setting up the HP Jornada 720
  1. Connect to AC power.
    Connect the cable from the AC adapter to the DC jack on the right side of your HP Jornada. Then connect the power cable to the AC adapter and plug the power cable into an AC power outlet.
  2. Install the main batery.
    Note: after you install the battery, the Jornada will turn on automatically.
  3. Install the backup battery.
    Turn the Jornada upside-down and open the CompactFlash (CF) door. Open the backup battery cover and insert the battery printed side up in the battery compartment. Close the backup battery cover and the CompactFlash door.
  4. Follow the Welcome Wizard on the screen.
    Using the stylus, calibrate the touch screen and configure device settings such as the World Clock.
  5. Microsoft® Outlook®.
    You need to have MS Outlook on your desktop PC if you wish to synchronize contacts, e-mail, appointments or tasks with your Jornada. MS Outlook 2000 usually comes with MS Office. On your desktop PC go to "Start>Programs" and look for the shortcut "Microsoft Outlook". If you do not already have it, follow these instructions to install it:
    1. Insert the CD-ROM called "Microsoft ActiveSync® 3.1" included with your Handheld PC pack.
    2. If the window "Setup Microsoft ActiveSync® 3.1" starts, click "Cancel".
    3. Select "Start>Run", click on "Browse" and select your CD-ROM drive (the unit name will show as Windows_CE). Open the folder "Extras" and then the folder "Outlook". Select the "SETUP.EXE" file and click OK.
    4. Enter the 25-character Product Key which you can find written on the cover of the Discovering Microsoft® Outlook® 2000 manual included with the pack.
    5. Select "Install Now"
  6. Install the "Microsoft® eMbeded Visual tools 3.0" (optional).
    If you plan to program Windows CE applications on your desktop PC, I recommend you to install the development tools before installing Microsoft® ActiveSync®. Go to the Development tools section for more information.
  7. Install Microsoft® ActiveSync®.
    You can either install Microsoft® ActiveSync® 3.1, which is included with the pack, or install the new version Microsoft® ActiveSync® 3.5 (more robust version), which may be downloaded and installed from the Microsoft® ActiveSync® download page. For details on how to install ActiveSync® follow the link at the bottom of this page.
      Note on Compatibility:
    ActiveSync 3.1 supports Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98 (including Second Edition) ,Windows ME and Windows 2000 Professional Edition. ActiveSync 3.1 also supports Microsoft Office 95, Office 97 and Office 2000, including Outlook 97, Outlook 98 and Outlook 2000.
    ActiveSync 3.5 supports Windows 98 (including Second Edition), Microsoft Windows ME, Windows 2000 Professional Edition and Windows XP. ActiveSync 3.5 also supports Office 97, Office 2000, and Office XP, including Outlook 98, Outlook 2000, and Outlook 2002.
  8. After you complete the installation, the Microsoft ActiveSync Get Connected dialog box appears, prompting you to connect your HP Jornada.
  9. Connect the Jornada to your desktop PC using either the sync cable (serial port), the docking cradle (serial or USB port) or via the infrared port.
  10. The New Partnership Wizard will start automatically. Follow the instructions on your screen to type a name for your HP Jornada and set synchronization options (you can choose the Outlook applications -contacts, tasks, etc- to be synchronized every time you connect your Jornada with your desktop PC.
