Engineering Projects In Community Service
LCC: Lafayette Crisis Center

As community services in Lafayette expand, the need for improved information distribution grows. Currently, the volunteers at the Lafayette Crisis Center link citizens to these community services. Crisis Center volunteers accept phone calls and offer walk-in services for members of the Lafayette community. But, these volunteers are not a highly visible group, and they can not help people until the needy contact them first. Citizens need an easier, more visible link to community services and information. The Automated Assistance Center (AAC) kiosk fulfills this need. The EPICS-LCC group will help the Crisis Center serve the needs of people by building an AAC that automatically provides agency information, on demand, to the general public.

At the Crisis Center, trained volunteers match needy callers to service agencies by utilizing a relational database that contains eligibility, contact, and custom agency information. The EPICS-LCC group is building an AAC that interfaces with the Crisis Center's database. This kiosk is controlled by a interface which gives the user access to information on everything from where to go for family counseling to who to call in the event of an emergency.

The main goal of the LCC group is to develop a functional kiosk prototype that can later be refined and distributed throughout the Lafayette area.
