This shows part of a colliding-pulse-modelocked (CPM) ring dye laser, used extensively during the 1980s for generating pulses below 100 femtoseconds. Although no longer widely used, it makes for prettier photos than current femtosecond lasers, such as Ti:sapphire and Er:fiber, whose beams are not in the visible range.
