Course Description |
| Women Artists of the American West (WAAW) is a 3-credit college-level distance learning course offered by Purdue University. It focuses on women's achievements in the visual arts west of the Mississippi during the past 200 years. WAAW, Art and Design 590w, may be taken for undergraduate or graduate credit. The course involves reading, interactive discussion, and writing. It is taught entirely on the Internet. |
| Women Artists of the American West is about new experiences in learning: the Internet enables students to visit artists' studios, museums, and full-color Web exhibitions created especially for this course. We read illustrated essays and discuss ideas and artworks via on-line interactive technologies such as real-time Chat and Web-based discussion. In addition, artists and historians visit our electronic classroom to share their work in special on-line guest lectures. A CD-ROM copy of the Website is the interactive textbook for this course. You may preview the readings and sample syllabi on the WAAW Website. |
How to Enroll |
| Women Artists of the American West is designed to be an elective for most art history, women's studies and American studies programs. Because this is a distance learning course, it may be taken by anyone at any location, and all credit is transferrable upon successful completion of the course. Since each institution's transfer requirements will vary, be sure to check with your home institution concerning transfer of academic credit. |
| All students enroll through Purdue University's Center for Lifelong Learning. Please register on-line or telephone Barb Tyner to request registration materials at either +1 765 494-2973 or toll-free +1 800 359-2968, extension 89. The course number for WAAW is Art and Design 590W. |
| During Summer 2001, WAAW students will meet for live Internet Chat on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8pm to 9:30pm Eastern Time. (Students in other time zones should be aware of the time difference -- for example, students in California will meet for Chat from 5pm to 6:30 Pacific Time.) Chat attendance is strongly encouraged; students should reserve this time in order to fully enjoy and participate in this course. |
Technical Requirements |
| Students must be assured of regular access to a computer with the following minimum requirements: 16 MB RAM, CD player, Netscape Navigator v.3 or higher or Internet Explorer v.3 or higher, and email capability. Browsers must be java-enabled, so we recommend that you upgrade to at least Netscape 4.0, which is the preferred browser for accessing our Chat room and viewing the course CD-ROM. Monitors should be able to display thousands of colors for best viewing, and modems should be at least 28.8bps so that images download quickly. The course CD-ROM is both Macintosh and Windows compatible. |
|
Course Requirements |
| Students participate in two discussions: Live Chat meets twice per week, and a separate, Threaded Discussion is accessible at all times. Students discuss the readings and meet with instructors and guest artists in Live Chat. Students also respond to the readings by writing comments in the Threaded Discussion forum at their convenience. Study guide questions are provided. Written comments average 2-3 pages per week; approximately 30 pages (including independent research) for the course duration. There are no exams; grades are based on participation and writing. |
