Tear down

I didn't get to much time over the summer to work on my 1937 Ford pickup but I did make some headway. After looking at the truck and all the loose pieces I had a pretty good idea of what was of use to me, to someone else or just plain junk. And there was a little bit of it all. Now it was time to tear it all down. The hood, grille shell and radiator were removed to gain access to the old flathead. The flathead was something I wasn't going to use but thought someone else may want or need. The engine and transmission were placed directly on a trailer for the then up coming GoodGuys event in Indy.

With the old powerplant now out of the way it was time to tackle the cab and suspension. Since I was doing this by myself I found it easier to remove the suspension at this point. The rear suspension was removed as a whole unit and broke down off of the truck frame. I removed the front brakes from the spindles, then removed the spindles and dropped the wishbone and axle as one unit. The axle has some unnatural curves in it and will be placed in the junk pile after it is removed from the wishbone. The bone will be split and reused on the new fronts suspension. Most of the removed suspension that I didn't plan on using or pitching were later sold at the Fall Hoosier Auto Show and Swap Meet.

Four things were done buy selling the extras at swap meets. Mainly the parts are now out of my garage. When you tear it down all these parts can take up lots of needed room. Next are the parts went to people who could use them and didn't end up in the scrap metal yard. Then the fun weekend spent with a couple of friends at the swap meet and the people we met there. And finally a little bit of money was made to put back towards the project. I'll admit I didn't make a lot of money but I did sell it and the other three things more than made up for it!

Next up was to separate the cab and frame. The cab was slowly and carefully lifted a small amount off of the frame and firmly supported on jackstands. A dolly was then rolled under the frame and the frame was lowered onto it. Then it was then rolled out from under the cab to the other side of the garage. I then reset the jack stands under four of the cabs mounting points. The cab will be later be placed on the dolly so that it may be moved around the garage.

Next up, frame repair.
