Project Description

My Ph.D. thesis focuses on understanding of the active site requirements of Cu–zeolites for ammonia selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) for diesel engine exhaust. By understanding the site requirements, one can elucidate the mechanism of Standard SCR on these catalysts which in turn can be used to synthesize better catalysts. Using a combination of reaction kinetics, UV-Visible infrared spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we have identified isolated Cu ions within the zeolite as the active site for Standard SCR while clustered Cu ions are more facile toward non selective oxidation reactions (such as NO oxidation).
