Slot: Shortened Loop Overlay Transport

What is Slot?

Slot is a framework that leverages overlay networks to improve the throughput of TCP transfers. Slot is currently running as a service on PlanetLab. This service is for downloading large web files and can speed up your downloading.

How to Use Slot?

Rewrite the URL you want to download by inserting proxy.slot-net.org:3175 at the beginning of the URL. Then use your web brower or any other downloading tool to download the rewritten URL.

The following example shows how to rewrite the URL. Suppose you want to download http://snapshot.debian.net/index.html, you should rewrite the URL as follows,

http://proxy.slot-net.org:3175/snapshot.debian.net/index.html

proxy.slot-net.org:3175/snapshot.debian.net/index.html
proxy.slot-net.org:3175/http://snapshot.debian.net/index.html
http://proxy.slot-net.org:3175/http://snapshot.debian.net/index.html

If you are using wget, a cool thing is that if you use -S option (show server response), you can see how Slot routes your TCP connections in the "X-Slot" http header.

Usage Restrictions

1. Access to the proxies are restricted to .edu domain.
2. Only port 80 traffic is allowed.
3. Do not use Slot to fetch illegal content. We reserve the right to make access logs public at any time or to share them at any time.
