  1. Do you have any recommendations on how to type up our homework?  i.e. do you use the equation editor in Word?  Is that acceptable, or are there easier equation editors you recommend? (Mathcad, for example)

Ans: As far as typing of our assignments is concerned, I would recommend LaTeX, a typesetting system designed for typing math. Otherwise you will have to use Word's Equation Editor or any other word processor that you find good for typing math.

  1. For the MATLAB part of problem 1, what should we submit?  M-code and the output of running MATLAB?

Ans: Something similar to the solution of Problem 2 in the old Funwork 2 would be more than sufficient.

  1. On problem 3(6.8), part b, I set the gradient to zero and solved for x.  I got a single answer of [-5/4, 1/2].  The problem statement in the textbook seems to indicate I should be able to find multiple points that satisfy the FONC.  Can you explain?

Ans: In 6.8 (b) there is only one critical point, the one you calculated.

  1. On problem 4(6.14), part b, I find F(x) to be indefinite for all d.  Will you be talking about that in class?  I assume that if I satisfy the FONC and do not satisfy the SONC, then the point x-superstar is not a local minimizer?

Ans: In 6.14 (b) you are right but have to check the sign definiteness for the feasible directions only and not for the whole .

  1. Will we have to type up all the homework assignments?

Ans: Yes, the remaining assignments will have to be typed as well. I will not be accepting hand-written reports. This is a part of educational experience to learn how to type math.
