You can display a theme based on one of its attributes by selecting a field from the Legend Editor.

In this example, Pop_93 is an attribute of the Counties theme. When you select Pop_93 from the Field dropdown list, the Legend Editor editor assigns a symbol (color) for each unique value in Pop_93. When the Apply button is clicked, the changes are reflected in the theme's display.
