Use the Milking Center Wastewater Treatment Assessment software to complete the following problem. Print the report from the risk program. Propose changes if you believe changes are necessary and re-run the risk assessment again printing the report. Justify proposed changes or if you do not propose changes justify why you decided changes were not necessary.

The owner of a 110 head dairy operation located in Rush County, Indiana has hired you to perform an assessment of the treatment and management of milking wastewater for the operation. You visit the location and decide to use the milking center wastewater risk assessment program to assist with the evaluation of the operation. Upon inspection of the operation and in discussions with the owner, you learn the following:

• Most (about 75%) of the milking center wastewater is discharged to liquid manure storage.
• All remaining wastewater is drained to a concrete storage/settling tank.
• It is believed the concrete storage/settling tank is uncracked and therefore water tight.
• Prior to milking parlor washdown, manure and excess feed are scrapped into the manure storage pit.
• The storage/settling tank that washdown is stored in is cleaned yearly in early summer.
• The wastewater from the storage/settling tank is stored approximately 3.75 months on average before being discharged on the pasture near the dairy operation.
• The pasture onto which the wastewater is discharged has moderately permeable soils.
• The well is located about 220 feet downslope from the pasture.
