Mid-Term Paper

Proposal Due Sept 19

The mid-term paper is meant to provide an opportunity to allow you to explore an environmental issue (preferably a rural environmental issue) in more detail. The paper should address an environmental issue (what is the issue, why is it an issue, what is being done, etc) - in the second portion of the class you'll select a specific environmental problem/concern and evaluate solutions (the topics for the paper and the problem you'll address do not need to be the same, and in fact I would prefer they be different). The subject matter can be something that is covered in class that you would like to explore in more detail or it can be an environmental issue (preferably with rural implications) that is not discussed in class. A one paragraph proposal describing the topic you wish to address in the term paper is due by Monday September 19. I'll review your proposal to make sure you have narrowed the topic adequately and to determine if you can likely find adequate materials to assist you in writing the paper.

The paper should be typed double spaced (see course syllabus for paper due date). It is anticipated that most papers will be approximately 7-8 pages in length. However, a paper might be slightly shorter or longer depending on the topic selected and your writing style. The suggested outline for the paper is shown here. Please include appropriate references in the paper. You should explore at least 3 references. These can be articles from magazines or journals, references, conference proceedings, government documents, internet resources, etc. At least one reference must be from a source other than a web site.

Here's a list of potential topics (you're welcome to choose others!!!):

  1. air quality
  2. global change and its implications for agriculture, agribusiness, or the rural homeowner
  3. some aspect of rural environmental law
  4. wetlands (we'll talk about them but can't begin to cover all aspects)
  5. site specific farming and its environmental implications
  6. rural environment and its relationship to biodiversity
  7. recycling
  8. animal agriculture and the environment
  9. environmental issues that agribusiness is facing
  10. the impact of CZMA (coastal zone management act)
  11. the Florida Everglades nonpoint source pollution issues and settlement
  12. sustainable agriculture
  13. total maximum daily loads (TMDLs)
