There has been a worldwide growth of concern about the state of the environment. Whether this has been stimulated by such concerns as climate change, or by local concerns such as air pollution, waste-disposal costs, water depletion, or social trends, this has clearly resulted in public interest in environmental issues. The lodging industry has traditionally dealt with many environmental matters in its own way. These activities were undertaken at the unit level as much for cost-benefit reasons as for concern about the environment. The industry continues to focus on these dimensions, as does the content of this program. Overall, there are five reasons for the lodging industry to be environmentally consciousness.
