This series was prompted by concerns by the livestock industry over the increase in ethanol capacity in the state. The concerns centered on the quality and consistency of DDGS byproduct. The seminar series was developed and conducted with the support and encouragement of Purdue's Agricultural Administration and was organized by Alan Schinkel, Otto Doering, and Don Jones. The focus was to:
- Identify the potential benefits and disadvantages to Indiana Agriculture, in general;
- Make interested Purdue staff aware of ongoing campus research and involvement in this area;
- Learn about the actual chemical and physical processes that take place when ethanol is extracted from corn;
- Provide an overview of the economics and logistics of ethanol production in Indiana;
- Look at the potentially negative impacts on animal production in the state and suggest remedies.
The primary benefit of this series was to inform all interested staff of the processes, industry concerns, and economics involved and stimulate discussions across campus.
The genesis of the first DDGS seminar was to address concerns raised by Animal Scientists about the digestibility of DDGS by non-ruminant animals and the potentially negative effects on carcass quality. These concerns were heightened by recent estimates that as much as 20% of Indiana's corn crop could be diverted to the ethanol plants now under construction in the state.
