MSPLS Fall 1995 Workshop

The above photo shows some of the attendees of the MSPLS Fall 1995 workshop which was held on Saturday, October 28, 1995 at Loyola University. It is interesting to note that, although Loyola is firmly planted on the north shore of Chicago, Illinois, attendees came from as far east as SUNY Stony Brook on Long Island, New York and as far south as the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Alabama. Ok, so we have a somewhat generous definition of "Midwest" in the Midwest Society for Programming Languages and Systems....

There were quite a few presentations at this meeting, and they also were from a surprising range of places. Not only were various schools represented, but there were also a number of companies participating. It was a very full day; talks began at 10:30am and ended at 6:00pm. To accomodate the large number of presentations, each talk was limited to a 20 minute presentation followed by 5 minutes of questions. Talk title, author lists, and extended abstracts are/will be available online at Loyola's WWW site.

The last talk involved a proposal from our president for the creation of an MSPLS journal. This new journal will cover the full scope of the MSPLS, providing a more formal publication channel complementing the informality of the workshop presentations. The OPEN Review Journal Of The MSPLS also seeks to provide a new model for high-quality peer-reviewed publication, as described in the slides from Prof. Dietz's presentation. The journal will begin accepting papers sometime late this year; watch the MSPLS home page for further details.

The $25 registration fee not only covered the workshop, but also covered parking fees, lunch, and super at a local restaurant. Discussion of the journal proposal, research, and even a few things that had nothing to do with languages, systems, or computers continued through the various courses of our Indian-style vegetarian super... which wound down around 9:00pm.

Yes, it was a long day, but everyone agreed that our hosts at Loyola did an excellent job making the workshop both a valuable exchange of technical ideas and a pretty nice way to spend a saturday....
