The Spring 1998 MSPLS workshop was held on Saturday, May 16, 1998 at Loyola University in Chicago, 25 East Pearson Street, Rubloff Auditorium. This immediately followed the IEEE Computer Society's 1998 International Conference on Computer Languages (ICCL 98), which yielded a number of benefits and a few disadvantages. The conference was easier to attend and to organize, and registration fees were waived, but a lot of attendeees and potential attendeees were a bit burnt-out after ICCL, and the meeting attendance was also hurt by the date being past the end of the Spring semester at many universities.
Because it followed ICCL, the meeting was kept short. There were just six presentations, but these covered work from the University of Chicago, Tel-Aviv University, University of Wisconsin at Madison, Bell Labs Lucent Technologies, Luther College, University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, and Purdue University. Each presentation was given a somewhat generous 30 minutes, which allowed a bit more detail and more discussion. Talk titles, author lists, and abstracts are available online at Loyola's site. At the end of the technical sessions, we held a short business meeting.
The President of MSPLS, Hank Dietz (hankd@ecn.purdue.edu), announced that although he will continue to work on various aspects of MSPLS administration, including the establishment of the MSPLS electronic journal, it would be appropriate to acknowledge the excellent work of Gerald Baumgartner (gb@cis.ohio-state.edu) and Konstantin Laufer (laufer@cs.luc.edu) in coordinating MSPLS meetings - by giving one or both of them the title of President. It was moved, seconded, and unanimously agreed, that Gerald and Konstantin would share the title of MSPLS President as "Co-Presidents."
It was also determined that MSPLS should move to a regular Spring & Fall meeting schedule, with meetings timed to be more sensitive to conference and semester schedules. To ensure that this goal is met, Hank Dietz at Purdue University proposed that he will serve as the "default host" for any MSPLS meetings that would otherwise have to be cancelled due to lack of a host volunteer. It was announced that the Fall 1998 MSPLS meeting will be held at DePaul University, hosted by Karen Bernstein (kbernstein@cs.depaul.edu).

Discussion of things MSPLS, and things not even close to MSPLS, continued through our Tai super... which wound down around 9:00pm.
