Venkataramanan (Ragu) Balakrishnan
was born in India. He received the B.Tech. degree in Electronics
and Communication Engineering and the President of India Gold Medal
from The Indian Institute of
Technology, Madras , India in 1985, graduating at the top of the
University. He received the M.S. degree in Statistics in 1992, and
the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering, in 1989 and 1992
respectively, all from Stanford
University. His Ph.D. advisor at Stanford was Professor Stephen Boyd. From
September 1992 to February 1993, he was a Post-Doctoral Scholar at the
Information Systems Laboratory
in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford
University. From February 1993 to August 1993, he was a Post-Doctoral
Scholar and a Lecturer at the
California Institute of Technology. From September 1993 to August
1994 he was a Research Associate at the Institute for Systems Research,
University of Maryland. Since August 1994, he has been on the faculty
in the School of Electrical and
Computer Engineering at Purdue
University, West Lafayette, Indiana, where is currently a
Professor. For the 1999-2000 academic year, Professor Balakrishnan
served as the Interim Director of Graduate Admissions for the School
of ECE. During the 2003-2004 academic year, he served as the
Assistant Head of ECE for strategic initiatives, as well as the
Director of Graduate Admissions. From 2004-2007, he served as the
Associate Head of ECE. Since August 2007, he has been serving as the
Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering at Purdue.
Since January 2009, he is also serving as the Interim Head of the
School of ECE.
Professor Balakrishnan's research interests are primarily in the areas of
control, and the application of convex optimization to problems from systems,
control, robotics, communication and signal processing.
He received an
Office of Naval Research
Young Investigator Award (ONR-YI)
1997.
From the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue,
he received the Ruth and Joel Spira Outstanding Teacher Award
in 1997, and the Honeywell Award for excellence in teaching in 2001.
He was named a Purdue University Scholar in 2008.
Professor Balakrishnan is a member of
IEEE and
SIAM.
During 1999-2001, he was the chairman of the
IEEE Technical Committee on Robust Control
(under the
IEEE Control Systems Society).
He has served on the IEEE Control Systems Society
Conference Editorial Board,
and on program committees for the
IEEE Conference on Decision and Control,
American Control Conference, and
IEEE Conference on Control Applications and Computer-Aided
Control Systems Design.
Besides serving as a referee for numerous technical journals
and conferences, Professor Balakrishnan was a guest-editor for
a two-part special issue of the International Journal
of Robust and Nonlinear Control on Linear Matrix
Inequalities in Control Theory and Applications, published
in November-December 1996.
He served as
an Associate Editor of the
IEEE Transactions on Automatic control (TAC) during January
2001-December 2003, and
as an Associate Editor of the
SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization (SICON) during
2000-2004.
Professor Balakrishnan is coauthor of the research monograph
Linear
Matrix Inequalities in System and Control Theory,
SIAM, 1994.
