MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF WASTE MATERIALS AND NON IDEAL SOILS

Soil mechanics developed on the basis of the study of two ideal materials:  pure clay and clean sand (sand without fines).  This line of research seeks to extend the body of knowledge of materials that don't fit either model and thus behave differently.

Specific Research Interests

Mechanical response of silty and clayey sands
  1. Shear Strength and Stiffness of Silty Sands.
  2. Evaluation of Liquefaction Resistance of Clean and Silty Sands Based on CPT Cone Penetration Resistance.

Cavity expansion in lightly cemented sand

Analysis of embankments and backfills made of soil-tire shred mixes

  1. Rubber Sand as Lightweight Geomaterial.
  2. Pullout Testing of Geogrids in Tire Shreds and Rubber Sand.
  3. Pullout Testing of Geogrids in Tire Shreds and Rubber Sand.
  4. Interaction Between Tire Shreds, Rubber-Sand and Geosynthetics.
  5. Tire Shreds and Rubber Sand as Lightweight Backfill Material.
  6. Application of Shredded Tires as Lightweight Backfill.
Mechanical behavior of bottom and fly ash
  1. Engineering Properties of Wastewater Treatment Sludge Modified by Hydrated Lime and Fly Ash.
  2. Compaction of Fly and Bottom Ash Mixtures.
  3. Building Embankments of Coal Combustion Fly Ash-Bottom Ash Mixtures.
  4. Mixtures of Coal Combustion Ashes for Highway Embankments.
  5. Compaction and Shear Strength of Fly and Bottom Ash Mixtures.
  6. Mechanical properties of fly and bottom ash mixtures for embankment application.

Mechanical behavior of other waste materials

  1. Use of Pyrolized Carbon Black as an Additive in Hot-Mix Asphalt.
  2. Retaining Wall Model Test with Waste Foundry Sand Mixture as Controlled Low Strength Materials.
  3. Retaining Wall Model Test with Foundry Sand Mixture Backfill.
  4. Engineering Properties of Waste Foundry Sand Mixtures as Controlled Low Strength Materials.
  5. Engineering Properties of Asphalt Binder Modified by Pyrolized Carbon Black.
