Vice President - Mac Legault
Malcolm L. Legault, Ph.D., CSP, Dr. Legault, his friends know him as Mac, came to Indiana State University in August of 2003 as an Assistant Professor teaching in the Safety Management undergraduate major and in the Occupational Safety Masterís program. He has worked in the safety profession for over seventeen years, primarily in the agricultural industry. Prior to coming to Terre Haute, he worked for the National Safety Council in Iowa managing the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety or NECAS. After earning his Ph.D. at The Pennsylvania State University he was promoted to a Research Associate within the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department. Mac has had a broad range of occupational experiences in his career. A few examples include: working for a mining contracting company where he worked in gold, uranium, platinum, molybdenum mines, and one coal mine; operated a beef feed lot; trained racing Quarter Horses; taught high school agricultural education; worked in a beef packing plant; and was an agricultural extension educator. As a side note, in one of the gold mines he had the opportunity to go over 8700 feet below surface.
These jobs have given Dr. Legault as deep respect for the hazards associated with various workplaces. To that end, he has been diligent to in seeking research grants from various agencies and has been successful in receiving almost $1.7 million for conducting applied research in agricultural safety. Since coming to Indiana State University, he has teamed up with Dr. Sheldon where they have applied for over $2 million in funding. Unfortunately, except for one proposal, the proposals have not been funded. Dr. Legault stated that only about 20 percent of projects get funded so he is still very optimistic about future opportunities, considering his past successes. To maintain a current understanding of what it takes to receive federal agency funding, he participates on funding review panels for NIH/CDC/NIOSH.
Mac is very involved in professional societies and organizations. He is currently the Ergonomics, Safety and Health Division Vice-Chair for the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE). During the nine-year rotation he will hold the position of Division Chair for the last three years. Mac was the writer/editor for the major safety standard for the society, S318.15. S318.15, Safety for Agricultural Field Equipment, is an ANSI recognized standard. Dr. Legault is very active in another agricultural safety organization called, NIFS or the National Institute for Farm Safety, Inc. He was elected to the Board of Directors, in 2005. Mac is also President of the Board of Directors for Emergency Services Rescue Training, Inc.
Just for fun, Mac enjoys swimming, reading, being with his family, and when the opportunity arises, riding horses.
