CE 506 Homework Fall 2003
- homework 1. matlab practice due
1 week, tues. 2-sep. solution
- homework 2. problems from the text: 3-6,8,9,10,11. regardless
of the instructions in the problem, do them all by the method of
"observations only". you may enforce the condition equations either
by substitution or by lagrange multipliers. make sure for every
problem to clearly state n, no, and r. due thursday 11 september.
solution
- homework 3. some problems
due friday, 19 september. solution
- homework 4. matrix LS due 1 week,
friday, 26 september.
solution,
another solution with more details
- homework 5. nonlinear LS problems,
due thursday, 9 october (no class, give to brian).
solution
- homework 6. probability and error propagation. take the adjustment
results from homework 5, problem 2(a) - the unconstrained trilateration
problem. use the adjusted observations as the original observations,
and the final parameter estimates as the initial approximations for
the parameters. program 1000 solutions of the LS problem, where,
for each execution you apply normally distributed random variables
with the given sigmas to the observations. collect all of the observations
and the resulting parameter estimates in some big arrays. then
make a scatter plot of observation 1 vs. observation 2. also make
a scatter plot of the x & y coordinates of the estimated point 5.
on a separate copy of the point 5 graph, sketch 2 closed curves
which enclose approximately 50% and 90% of the points. also: from the
text, problems 5-4, 5-7, 5-14, 5-16.
due thursday, 30 october. (you will need to read chapter 5)
- homework 7. error propagation & network adjustment.
from chapter 6, 6-9, 6-11, 6-12. adjust the traverse problem
given in traverse description.
show the covariance matrix for parameters, the residuals, and
the adjusted observations. due tuesday, 11 november.
see the starnet data file for the homework traverse in
starnet data
- homework 8. evaluation of "the measure of all things" by
ken alder. (a) this is a book about a geomatics engineering project
written by a history professor. what are some of the geomatics
concepts that are misrepresented or poorly explained?
(b) with the benefit of hindsight, how should mechain have reacted
to the inconsistent results that he obtained in barcelona?
describe a scenario in your chosen career in which you might get
a large residual, inconsistent with the others, even after reobserving.
how should you handle this? (1.5-2 page essay, due tuesday, 9 dec.)
- homework 9. GPS pseudorange processing & post adjustment
statistics. problem description,
and matlab data file. due in
2 weeks, tuesday, 2 december.
